- May 9, from 6 - 9 pm: "Nuestras Raices"

at the C9/JRL Multipurpose Room
By El Centro: “Nuestras Raices”, formerly known as Cesar Chavez Convocation on
Thursday, May 9, 2024 from 6-9pm (doors open at 5:30pm).

Nuestras Raices honors the work that generations of activists before us have fought for while allowing for the acknowledgment of the work of current and future activists. This new name allows for connections amongst the community, being inclusive of the work and intersectionality of different Latine communities, which creates space for folks to listen, participate, and learn from the experiences of these individuals.

This year, we are planning on showing the film "Water for Life" a 90-minute documentary that documents the work of water protectors Berta Cáceres, an Indigenous Lenca leader in Honduras; Francisco Pineda, a subsistence farmer in El Salvador; and Alberto Curamil, an Indigenous Mapuche leader in Chile. The film “Water For Life” illuminates a growing recognition of Indigenous rights and a rising demand for corporate responsibility and environmental justice that’s being seen around the world. We will be hosting a panel discussion with the film producers after the film.

We invite you and your community to attend this event to learn about indigenous water protectors and engage in critical community conversations, and global activism. Please help us promote and incentivize participation among students. The flyer is attached to this email with all the event information, and the RSVP form for participants to submit. Other logistics including parking are provided on the RSVP form.

- May 11th, 1:00-3:30pm: Strawberry & Justice Festival 2024
at the UCSC Hay Barn
The food systems working group aims to encourage and foster learning journeys towards sustainable food systems education and social justice awareness through our three main organizations: Real Food Calculator, Demeter Seed Library, & Produce Pop-Up with collaboration from UC Basic Needs & Cowell Coffee Shop.
For our Strawberry & Justice Festival we aim to host workshops, sustainable strawberry taste tasting, music and speakers in order to generate conversation about food justice within the system of strawberries and beyond! We would love to get firsthand knowledge and interaction with your experiences in food systems, climate and environmental justice within your area of expertise while sharing it with your campus & community.
If you have any questions or concerns please email us back at ucscfwsg@ucsc.com. Thanks much looking forward to hearing back from you :)
